It’s An “A” For Q

Adam writes…

I am addicted to music magazines. A very British addiction, I think. In the U.S, critical opinion and commercial success have long been driven by radio. Here in the U.K, our print media has ruled over the airwaves since the inception of the pop charts in the 50’s.

I take the NME every week to keep up with new music and Mojo every month so that I don’t get too frightened and can still find reassurance in long articles about The Who and The Clash, et al…

But sometimes I look at the mag racks and sigh… bloody hell, not ANOTHER Beatles cover.

From time-to-time I have to wonder… what’s left to be said?

The truth is out there. Several versions of it! The facts are surely all covered. Only critical angles and autobiographical connections are left, and it’s all a matter of how well, and with what degree of originality those angles and covered.

And so it’s top marks to this month’s Q…

The cover (pictured) is from an obscure catalogue of Lybro, a long-gone Liverpool jeans manufacturer and dates from April 1963. Nice, off-the-beaten-track shot. Meanwhile inside music journo Phil Sutcliffe treats us to his account of a lifetime of Beatlemania. Full of warmth and beautifully well-observed, it is one of the loveliest piece of Beatle-journalism I’ve ever had the pleasure to read.

Q is on sale now.
