Dear Santa,

We've been good boys and girls this year and we'd like you to look at our Pinterest board (below) because these are just some of the titles that we'd like for Christmas this year, ta.

P.S We will probably be adding other titles over the next few weeks. Please don't substitute any new ones we might add in place of these original ones. We'd like to make it clear that we want them all. Yes, we really have been extremely good.

Rainy Day Walkers #12 & 35

Well done to all the rainy day women and men for not letting the weather get us down on today’s Rock’n’Roll London Walk! Here’s a song for all of you…

From New York our Walkers came (big Cream fan) and Chicago, too, as well as Belgrade (huge Pistols and Clash fans) and Seattle (a fan of Hendrix, o’course). As ever they were great company with plenty to say about the topic at hand. Undaunted by the rain, we discussed George Harrison, Pattie Boyd and Eric Clapton – a right good gossip we had there – as well as the topic of Clapton’s last great record. One walker suggested it was Five Live Yardbirds – made nearly 50 years ago! Harsh!

London Walks guide Andy tagged along with us and we started work on the next episode of the London Walks Podcast – the Musical London podcast will be available soon.

Back home now and almost dry, looking forward to finishing Morrissey’s outstanding Autobiography and then getting started on Mark Lewisohn’s gloriously ENORMOUS Beatles biog.

On Rock’n’Roll telly, we’re torn. The Nation’s Favourite Elvis song is on ITV. But we think we’re going for the Elvis Costello doco on BBC4.

On the wireless we’ll be kicking off our Saturday in the usual fashion with Sounds of the 60s on Radio 2. The website for the show is HERE.

Have a great weekend everyone! See you on the Rock’n’Roll London Pub Walk on Wednesday night at 7pm.

50,000 Records For Sale (And A Shop To Sell 'Em In)

Rock’n’Roll London guide Adam writes…

One of London’s finest old school record shops is up for sale.

On the Beat, tucked away in Hanway Street (above), is on eBay for offers over £300,000.

It’s a bargain. At twice the price.

And we were delighted to see that owner Tim Derbyshire has used a photo from this very blog on his auction!

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, Tim explained he was looking for a buyer who is, “Eccentric and not worried about making ends meet. I don't want someone to do it for the money, I want them to do it for the passion. Nobody's ever going to get rich quick running the place."

I’m leading the Rock’n’Roll London Walk this Friday at 2:00pm. If enough of you join me (and on Wednesday night for the Rock’n’Roll Pub Walk) then perhaps I can raise the money to buy it.

You can view the auction HERE. (Postage hasn't been specified.)

The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time?

Here’s our battered copy of last week’s NME…

It’s been passed around the punters on three Rock’n’Roll London Walks now, and has been the cause of much heated debate.

We LOVE these lists just for that very reason.

Here are a few comments from London Walkers…

Chas from Texas simply stated:

“It’s Revolver. There’s no debate.”

Fair enough, Chas.

A walker from Liverpool, however, was more forgiving:

It’s interesting that it’s not Revolver or Sgt Pepper or Pet Sounds or What’s Going On? at No.1. That marks some kind of sea change.”

Good point, this. In terms of these lists, we’ve lived in the shadow of those four records for decades. Are we moving into a new era?

Another London Walker – from New Jersey – was having none of it:

“It should be The Stones.”

“Which album?” I asked.

“Don’t care,” he grinned with a challenging look in his eye. “Any one of ‘em is better than The Smiths.”

That’s fighting talk. And that’s what we love about the Rock’n’Roll London Walk: the walkers are such passionate fans of The Music.

Here’s the Top Ten, as listed by NME…

1. The Smiths – The Queen Is Dead
2. The Beatles – Revolver
3. David Bowie – Hunky Dory
4. The Strokes – Is This It
5. The Velvet Underground – The Velvet Underground & Nico
6. Pulp – Different Class
7. The Stone Roses – The Stone Roses
8. Pixies – Doolittle
9. The Beatles – The Beatles
10. Oasis – Definitely Maybe

The full list is HERE

(Loving the White Album in there. Any thoughts drop us a line or leave a comment below.)

The Rock'n'Roll Reading List No.3: The Last Party

One of the most common questions asked of the guides on the Rock’n’Roll London Walk is: can you recommend a good Rock’n’Roll read.

It’s a tough question to answer in one line. So we’ve dedicated this blog series to answering it one classic book at a time, this time it's…

The Last Party: Britpop, Blair and the Demise of English Rock
By John Harris

Frank Zappa once said that “Rock journalism is people who can't write interviewing people who can't talk for people who can't read.”

John Harris’s The Last Party is an honourable exception on the first two counts.

Set against the backdrop of Tony Blair’s rise to power, The Last Party is the tale of Britpop – the mid-90’s explosion of British indie music into the mainstream.

Author John Harris – contributor to Q, Mojo, Rolling Stone and The Guardian, amongst others – is a writer whose dry wit always staves off the excitable excesses that so upset Mr Zappa. Harris was also an eyewitness to the events chronicled in The Last Party, working as he was for the NME at the inception of what became Britpop. His gifts as a writer and his proximity to the events make him the perfect man for the job.

And he has quite a cast of characters to work with. Blur slugging it out with Oasis for the Number One spot – a story that made the headlines on the BBC 9 O’clock News. Oasis’s Noel Gallagher visiting Tony Blair at 10 Downing Street. Oasis label boss Alan McGhee and his climb to the heights as a rock’n’roll visionary and subsequent descent into breakdown.

Many of Harris’s interviewees – particularly Justine Frischmann of Elastica – are prepared to put their side of the story free from any “showbiz” sheen – warts, needle marks and all. A far cry from Zappa’s “people who can’t talk”.

London locations abound – from Camden Town to Soho to Westminster – capturing the capital at a time when, as Harris sees it, the leftfield creative artists of British music began to chase the dollar and not the artistic glory, when politicians began to follow focus groups rather than ideology. Blur’s Alex James falling out of The Groucho with the other “celebs”; Jarvis Cocker gatecrashing Michael Jackson’s BRIT Awards stage show at Earl’s Court and being questioned by police for his trouble; Damon Albarn at the House of Commons; Noel Gallagher holding court at Supernova Heights, Belsize Park.

You will do well to remember Frank Zappa when you pick up The Last Party – his quote is always a good starting point for rock biography. But 300-or-so pages later, you’ll be closer to the quote often attributed to Hunter S. Thompson:

"The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side."

Rock’n’Roll Londres en Français

You can now book a private Rock’n’Roll London Walk in French!

London Calling. Tendez l'oreille.

Thanks To All Who Joined Us Today!

Thanks – and well done! – to everyone who joined us on a rather wet Rock’n’Roll Walk in rainy London town this afternoon.

From Brazil, Philadelphia, Surrey and Dundee they came (among other places), fans of The Beatles, The Stones, Guns and Roses and Led Zeppelin. Our Brazilian chum was in town to catch Roger Waters perform The Wall at Wembley tomorrow night.

Along the way we glimpsed Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols popping in to Sister Ray records on Berwick Street and saw the new pop up Clash shop.

Thanks again to all Walkers – we’re at it again this coming Wednesday night on the Rock’n’Roll London Pub Walk, 7pm at Tottenham Court Road Station.

Have a great weekend!
